Radiation Safety

Radiation safety is an essential component of radiology. Medical imaging technologies use ionizing radiation to produce images of the body. While ionizing radiation can be harmful in high doses, the doses used in medical imaging are typically very low and do not pose a significant risk to patients. However, radiation safety procedures must be followed to minimize the risk of exposure to medical personnel and patients. Radiation safety procedures including wearing protective equipment, such as lead aprons and gloves, using radiation shields, and limiting the time of exposure to radiation. Radiology technologists are also responsible for monitoring and maintaining radiation safety equipment, such as dosimeters and radiation monitors.
